  • Google+ lagging behind - 29-02-2012

New numbers from research firm comScore confirm what has long been believed -- Google+ is severely lagging behind competitors. Although the social media site was one of the fastest growing sites in history, it was found that, next to competitors, it is lagging behind in terms of engagement. Users spend just 3 minutes a month compared to the average 405 minutes on Facebook. It is even lagging behind the much maligned Myspace. Google maintains that they are on the right track. "We are making a long-term bet on the initiative and growing by every metric we care about," said Brad Horowitz, a Google VP of product management. Only time will tell if Google's "bet" pays off, right now the odds don't look so good.

  • Skype to Offer New Advertising Opportunities - 14-03-2011

Skype have recently announced that they are now offering large format advertising opportunities on their home page. At the moment it is only available in the US, the UK and Germany but it is expected to reach the Irish market sooner rather than later. Skype had an average of 145 million users each month by the end of 2010. This new advertising prospect means that advertisers will now be able to tap into this huge market and reach millions of consumers each day.

  • Paid Product Placement on Irish Television - 14-03-2011

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland has recently decided to allow paid product placement on Irish TV shows. With this new decision broadcasters will be obliged to provide a written announcement to state that the show does in fact contain product placement. Children’s shows and those with more than 20 per cent of news/current affairs content will be prohibited from the new paid product placement decision.

It was announced on February 1st 2011 that the Sunday Tribune had gone into receivership. The Sunday Tribune was founded in 1980 and it became one of Ireland’s most successful papers in the 80’s. Although it was a popular title, the Sunday Tribune has struggled financially for some time and a recent conversion to compact format has not seen a turnaround in its fortunes. It is unclear about the future of the Sunday Tribune as they seek potential investors for the title. For more information please contact a member of your team or e-mail info@starcom.ie

  • Snowed in with Supervalu - 03-02-2011

Supervalu’s strong performance this Christmas confirmed that shopping local was indeed the preferred choice for many Christmas shoppers. There is no doubt that the near arctic weather conditions contributed to SuperValu’s strong sales in Q4. However the RTE cross media partnership and the snow proved a very effective combination. Celebrity chef Kevin Dundon who has formed an alliance with Supervalu is popular among both young and old. Kevin continues to work with Supervalu, sharing weekly recipes in the run up to Easter.
